Dogs love to chew; they need to chew. However, some dogs get so excited chewing high value dog chews, such as bully sticks, that they swallow an entire bully stick whole. If you’ve ever had this happen before,
it’s a scary situation. Some dogs choke, gasp, throw up the chew, or need surgery to remove the dog chew. If this happened to you or it’s a concern, check out this tip.
Choose The Correct Size
Of course, choosing the correct size dog chew is important. For small dogs (under 20 pounds), choose a bully stick or “chewie” under 6-8 inches. With medium and large dogs, choose bully sticks 8 inches and longer. To maximum your dog’s chewing time, choose chewies that are thicker (larger circumference) or braided bully sticks.
Get Out The Vice Grips!
Yes, you read that correctly. Grab a pair of vice grips and place it in the middle of the chewie. By placing it in the middle of the dog chew, it prevents the dog from swallowing the entire chew. Once in place, lock the vice grip into place. While it looks a bit odd, give the chew and locked vice grip to your dog, and let them chew away. Most dogs will use the locked vice grip as a handle, and will happily chew each side of the chewie. When done, there’s a half inch of the dog chew left inside of the vice grip, which you should throw out (this prevents the dog from choking on the remaining piece).
A Few Suggestions
Obviously, you should always supervise your dog when he or she is chewing on a bully stick or other dog chews, to ensure they don’t choke on a large piece that was chewed off.
Personally, I’ve found smaller vice grips work better because larger versions, when given to larger dogs, can easily unlock the vice grip, which causes it to let go of the chew.
When your dog is done, say “Trade” to retrieve the remaining dog chew and throw out the small remnant sitting between the vice grips jaws.
If the visual of a vice grip dangling from your dog’s chew is alarming, there are devices that work the same way, however can cost over $20. As for effectiveness of these devices, it’s unsure so check reviews carefully.
If your dog tries to chew the metal vice grip, discontinue using it and try other devices that work the same way, however are safe to chew on.
Be careful of using vice grips around hard wood floors, this hard metal can cause some damage some flooring. It’s best to provide carpet or a rug for the dog to chew when using a vice grip. Or, the dog can enjoy inside his crate.
Dogs do certain things because they’re fun! However, fun dog behaviors are super annoying to people, and it becomes a vicious cycle. Before freaking out and screaming “stop” to your dog, take a deep breath. Now, take 5 minutes to an hour and think about what you’d like your dog to do instead of (fill in the blank). This is the key to changing your dog’s annoying behaviors fast! Using positive dog training techniques can teach your dog better behavior and strengthen the bond between you and your pet.
What Dog Behavior is Driving You Crazy?
Identifying a specific issue helps solve an issue quickly. What is your dog doing that drives you nuts? It could be anything. Instead of assuming that everything your dog does drives you crazy, try to narrow down the most frustrating one. Once you know the frustrating behavior, you can address it. If you don’t, it’s like bringing your car into a mechanic shop because something is wrong, but you can’t identify the issue.
If your dog has several annoying behaviors, pinpoint one that needs to be addressed immediately and work on that one first. Once the main issue is addressed, then move on to additional annoying behaviors. Trying to address all of your dog’s frustrating issues at once is like packing 10 pounds of sugar in a 5-lb sack; it’s not going to happen.
Once the most frustrating issue has been positively resolved, something interesting happens. All other minor behaviors seem to decrease because your dog has learned to do something else instead. Your dog is learning how to positively respond in situations, and both you and your dog are building a bond of trust and communication. Great job!
Here’s a list of common annoying dog behaviors that are fun for dogs, but annoying to pet owners:
Now that you’ve narrowed down a specific annoying dog behavior, it’s time to teach your dog an incompatible behavior. An incompatible behavior is the opposite of the annoying behavior. Basically, you’re telling your dog to do this instead of that. Examples of incompatible behaviors for common annoying dog behaviors are:
Walking on a loose leash instead of pulling on it.
Chewing dog toys instead of table legs.
Not putting teeth on your skin instead of nipping.
How to Teach an Incompatible Behavior
While this may seem like sunshine and rainbow wishes, it’s actually very simple to teach incompatible behaviors. Grab a handful of super yummy treats, and reward your dog when he does an incompatible behavior instead of an annoying one. Dogs eventually have to stop barking to take a breath, so click and reward even a nano-second of silence.
Redirect dogs to chew on their chew toys instead of expensive table legs, and crate dogs when you’re not home. Reward a dog when all four feet are on the floor instead of jumping. Think about it this way: If $100 bills rained from the sky when you sat down instead of standing, you would learn that sitting is super rewarding.
Identify the annoying behavior, then reward the incompatible behavior and the annoying behavior will disappear. Never punish annoying behaviors or they’ll hang around longer—just reward incompatible behaviors every time!

At some point as a pet owner, you have probably felt overwhelmed by the plethora of dog products on the market today. From the healthiest foods to the safest toys to the best collars, selecting the right ones can be daunting. Choosing treats or chews for your dog is a tough decision, too, due to the sheer number of varieties.
Chewing is an essential behavior for dogs and it’s very important for their mental as well as dental health. It can help eliminate behavioral problems, act as a training tool and alleviate boredom. Dogs explore with their noses and mouths, so selecting the right chew is essential. Among the various chews and treats found in pet stores and online, those with a “function” continue to grow in popularity and variety.
Besides tasting good, functional treats are designed to serve a purpose, such as promoting joint or dental health, mitigating pain and helping to relieve stress. Here are a few new treats I found that offer one or more of these benefits.
Pain Relief
These new-to-market treats are made with cannabidio (CBD), which is the non-psychoactive part of the cannabis plant. While studies of CBD are just officially beginning, preliminary testing indicates that it can help manage chronic pain and decrease anxiety in pets. Canna-Biscuits are natural, non-GMO treats available in a number of flavors, all of which include Canna-Pet®’s CBD formula made from hemp.
Dental
Designed to be fully digestible—unlike dental chew toys—a great example are the dental chews from Whimzees. Vegetarian and gluten-free, they are made in Holland and their shape and texture helps remove plaque and tartar, while giving your dog some solid chewing action.
Joint Health Chews
Glucosamine and chondroitin, which help support joint health, are now routinely included in a variety of pet treats and chews. Engage-ables from Indigenous Pet Products are wholesome, long-lasting chewy dog treats in the form of “gummi-bears.” (Actually, it’s similar to one large gummi bear.) Made in the USA, the treats are grain-, gluten- and GMO-free.
Calming
Bedtime Bones™ are an organic, chamomile bedtime treat for your dog. Chamomile can have a calming effect on pets (just as it does for humans). These crunchy treats come in 30-day boxes, one for each evening. They also make a great gift for small dogs. And for extra environmental consciousness, the packaging is made from recycled materials that are made with wind power.
Natural Treats
There are quite literally thousands of natural treats to choose from, including those mentioned above. The trick is to find a treat your dog will love from a company you trust. Many smaller companies are demonstrating a strong commitment to proper sourcing, testing and manufacturing. Case in point: The Honest Kitchen has a wonderful collection of treats in all sizes your dogs are sure to love. Other favorites of mine include lamb lung treats and trachea chews from Clear Conscience Pet, and new, alternative-protein chews and bones (such as crocodile bones and kangaroo chews) from Barkworthies.

Chewing is an issue many dog owners face. Your first instinct may be to call your local dog trainer to solve your dog’s chewing problem. However, you can get your dog to stop chewing on your shoes by redirecting his attention. Offering an alternate item, such as a chew toy, is a great way to stop your dog from chewing on valuables. There are many chew toys available in the market, but rawhide is one of the most popular ones. Read on to learn the pros and cons of using rawhide as a chew toy for your dog.
What is Rawhide?
One type of dog chew is compressed rawhide bones. Rawhides are made of bovine (cow) or swine (pig) hides that have been dried and processed into various shapes and sizes. As the name suggests, compressed chews are processed hides that have been tightly compressed into different shapes and often have added flavoring, such as garlic, beef or cheese, for additional appeal.
Some compressed rawhides have a knot tied on each end. A well-made rawhide should have some flexibility when twisted and produced in North America to reduce the amounts of added chemicals (such as formaldehyde). Rawhides are frequently washed in formaldehyde or bleached with titanium oxide (which turns them white) so use caution when selecting a dog chew. Veterinarians will warn you against bleached rawhides, as they can be harmful to your dog.
Rawhides are great for relieving boredom, exercising teeth and gums, and satisfying a dog’s need to chew, as long as they are safe health-wise. When selecting a rawhide, consult your professional dog obedience trainer. Always choose a bone that appears too large for the dog so he can’t chew and swallow it too quickly.
Also, make sure your dog can’t fit the rawhide completely into his mouth. When your dog is able to hold the entire chew in his mouth, it’s time to take it away. Some dogs manage to shred rawhide chews. This results in small pieces of rawhide hanging off the chew. If this occurs, simply cut them away with scissors to prevent your dog from ingesting them. Always supervise your dog while he enjoys any type of rawhide.
Rawhide Pros
Dogs love the intense flavor and aroma of most rawhides.
Compressed rawhide is more durable and long-lasting than shredded compressed rawhide.
Any type of chew that is safe and your dog enjoys is a good redirector from chewing other household items so it can be an asset to his animal training.
Rawhide Cons
An aggressive chewer may swallow large pieces or consume an entire rawhide quickly, which could cause an intestinal blockage. They can also potentially pierce the lining of the intestines or other organs, causing major medical problems.
Some dogs, especially aggressive chewers, may suffer from broken teeth or slab fractures of molars from chewing compressed rawhides, so always supervise your dog with any type of chew. If you’re unsure as to whether your dog is chewing too aggressively, consult your dog trainer.
Some added flavorings (visible or not) may stain carpets, fabrics and some porous floorings, which in turn can stimulate chewing on these items, making them an unfavorable dog training tool.
Chemical preservatives found in various types of inferior rawhide may be dangerous to your dog.
Again, if you’re unsure of the safety of a rawhide bone for your dog or the chewing problem persists, consult your dog trainer or veterinarian.
When it comes to dog toys, there are quite literally millions of choices available. However, it’s important for your dog’s physical health and emotional well-being that you select the most appropriate toys.
To find out what attracted dogs to toys, researchers from Bristol Veterinary School conducted a study in 2012 where they presented dogs with a variety of different toys for 30-second intervals and studied how long it took each dog’s attention to falter. The study’s results: Familiarity breeds contempt (or at least indifference), something you probably know from experience as a dog owner. The fact is that no matter what toy you select, your dog will lose interest after adjusting to the initial qualities.
It is important for your dogs to have a wide variety of toys so they don’t lose interest. In addition, you should control access to these toys so they remain “new” to your dogs. This is why you should think about “function” and the reasons why you’re shopping for a toy.
Size Matters
The iFetch automatic ball launcher
When it comes to choosing pet toys, size really does matter. Too big, the toy presents a problem to your dog’s teeth and jaw. Too small, the toy can pose a choking hazard. This is why it’s so important to choose a size-appropriate toy for dogs and to make sure that if a large size can be easily reduced (i.e., when your dog tears the toy apart), you’re there to (quite literally) pick up the pieces.
When buying toys made from plastic, be sure to focus on BPA-free toys. This is the same quality level we would expect for human infants, and there isn’t a dog alive that doesn’t deserve that type of consideration.
It’s important to note that there is no perfect toy. Indestructible toys can be uninteresting and possibly dangerous. Destructible toys can be too expensive. There are “better” choices on every level.
Smart Toys
For dogs who need mental stimulation and physical activity
DogSmart Toy from Nina Ottoson
Smart toys are great for dogs who show signs of stress, boredom or are up to generalized shenanigans on a regular basis. Nina Ottosson has an extensive line of “smart toys” focused on food in which the dogs must solve a puzzle prior to earning their treat. If you’re worried about your pet picking up pounds, you might prefer plush puzzle toys. There are several available, from plucking plush squirrels from a pretend tree to dismantling a sheep pen, options abound in this fun category. Check out Kyjen and ZippyPaws for some fun options.
Retrieving and Flirt Toys
For high-energy dogs who have a strong prey instinct
GoGoDog Pals’ remote-control “creature” for dogs can help burn off excess energy.
Action dog toys are get pets moving. These are fantastic options for pets who are regularly lying around, watching too much DogTV, and refusing to exercise. Kong’s ChaseIt line of toys works much in the same way as a cat dangler, encouraging pets to run after its prey. Also in the action category are remote-control cars (such as GoGoDog Pals) and automated tennis ball throwers (such as the new automated ball launcher from iFetch). If your dog is high-energy, you should consider a toy that will help burn off the excess energy. You might also want to consider a good old-fashioned Frisbee (now specially designed for dogs from Wham-O).
The Foobler: a feeder and toy in one
Food-Dispensing Toys
For sedentary dogs who are food-motivated
Food- dispensing dog toys are perfect for pets who are overweight, choosing a toy that will encourage slower eating throughout the day should be a consideration. Rather than encouraging your pet to eat on a schedule, they are free to “earn” their food. The Foobler is a new toy designed to do exactly that: Fill the six compartments with kibble, then set on the ground and head out. The toy will allow only one compartment to open at a time, and only in scheduled intervals, each of which are signaled with a sound. This is a great toy for dogs who prefer to work for their food, or who are easily bored.
Plush Toys
For dogs who enjoy chewing and the comfort of holding a toy
PetSafe’s line of Pogo Plush toys
Plush dog toys can be a mixed bag. As a dog owner you know how difficult it is to select a plush toy that will last longer than a few minutes. My favorite options include ultrasonic HEAR DOGGY!® toys, which have a squeaker that only your dog can hear—perfect for those who work at home or just don’t want to hear a squeaky toy all day). The Go Dog brand offers a durable toys that feature tough Chew Guard™ technology. Pogo Plush from Petsafe is another fan favorite, as these toys feature a cage that houses a floating squeaky. This helps make the squeaky elusive, prolonging the time it takes to burrow into it.
Dental Toys
Designed to keep dogs’ teeth and gums healthy
Himalayan Dog Chews can last a very long time–and they’re nutritious, too.
Dental dog toys are specially designed to keep your pets teeth and gums healthy. These specially designed chew toys encourage chewing. One of my dogs’ favorites is the Busy Buddy Bristle Bone from Petsafe. There is no shortage of natural chew toys either; two of my favorites include Antlerz and Himalayan Dog Chews. While these are indeed wonderful toys for most dogs, some types have been known to break teeth.
Indestructible Toys and Tug Toys
For heavy chewers
The GoughNut is designed for serious, heavy-duty chewers of all ages.
For your very destructive dogs who need an indestructible toy, you should check out two of the toughest: Goughnuts, which consists of a large plastic ball that you can fill with water to let even the most destructive dog chew all day without damage, and Bionic toys, which are made from a BPA-free, indestructible Bionic Rubber® that can withstand even the most aggressive chewers.
No matter which type of toy you choose, remember to switch out your pet’s toys often by taking them away and introducing another. This is important to keep your pets interest day-to-day.
